Calibration of reference evapotranspiration models in Pará Agronomy
Farias, Vivian Dielly da Silva; Costa, Deborah Luciany Pires; Pinto, Joao Vitor de Novoa; Souza, Paulo Jorge Oliveira Ponte de; Souza, Everaldo Barreiro de; Ortega-Farias, Samuel.
The use of empirical agrometeorological models that can be adjusted to the climatic conditions of different regions has become increasingly necessary to improve water management in grain-producing municipalities. The aim of this work is to examine the correlation between various reference evapotranspiration (ETo) estimation methods and the standard FAO 56 Penman-Monteith method, as well as to determine correction factors, when necessary, for crop-producing municipalities in the northeast of Pará, during both the rainy and dry seasons. We compared simpler methods of ETo estimation to the FAO 56 Penman-Monteith method. For this purpose, meteorological data from Tracuateua, Bragança, Capitão Poço and Castanhal, provided by the National Institute of...

CROP COEFFICIENT REGIONALIZATION FOR IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE PLANNING IN MARANHÃO STATE -BRAZIL REA
Silva,Wilson A. Da; Santana,Jhonata S.; Silva,Cristiane M. Da; Nunes,Acassio A..
ABSTRACT: Irrigated agriculture has emerged as a necessary technology to achieve greater productivity, mainly by supplying the water requirements of agricultural crops in critical periods, especially for those regions where natural rainfall is insufficient to meet these requirements. The daily water consumption of crops is strongly influenced by local weather conditions, which justifies the need for regionalized studies of the parameters influencing the water depth to be applied. The crop coefficient (Kc) is perhaps the most important parameter because it interferes directly with the crop water requirements. This index must be determined for each region, thus avoiding the use of reference values meant for other climatic conditions, causing loss of...

Crop water requirements, biomass and grain yields estimation for upland rice using CROPWAT, AQUACROP and CERES simulation models CIGR Journal
Akinbile, Christopher Oluwakunmi.
This study estimated crop water requirements using CROPWAT while AQUACROP and CERES models evaluated performance in simulating biomass and grain yield of upland rice’s response to different irrigation schedule. NERICA 4 was subjected to five treatment given as: full (100%ET), good (80%ET), medium (60%ET), average (40%ET), and low (20%ET) and three replicates in a randomized block design. It was planted at the farmyard of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Ibadan, Nigeria for two seasons 2015 and 2016 and the results of the first season was used in model calibration while second season’s result was used in validation. Biomass and grain yields values were obtained and compared with simulated values from AQUACROP and CERES and the...

Economics and politics of water resources development: Uda Walawe Irrigation Project, Sri Lanka AgEcon
Molle, Francois; Renwick, Mary E..
The Uda Walawe Irrigation and Resettlement Project (UWIRP) located in the Southern dry zone of Sri Lanka was initiated in the early 1950s. The original plan for the UWIRP was a highly ambitious social, economic and physical engineering project aimed at creating a modern, profitable agriculture sector. This report examines the history of water resources development and investment decisions for the UWIRP over a period of 50 years and uncovers underlying processes that shaped the evolution of the project and highlights the limitation of viewing development as a mere set of technical and social engineering endeavors.

Environmental and social values of river water: examples from the Menik Ganga, Sri Lanka. AgEcon
Dissanayake, Priyanka; Smakhtin, Vladimir U..
Many decisions on water allocation in river basins are made on economic grounds. Environmental and social benefits of water should also be considered in river basin management, and attempts should be made to value them similarly. This is not a straightforward task and very few studies have directly addressed this issue to date. In this paper, the Menik Ganga (River) in southern Sri Lanka is used as a case study to attempt and evaluate the costs and benefits of environmental water allocations, referred to as ‘environmental flows’ (EF). In this study, a broad definition of EF is used: the components of EF evaluated include the requirements of the religious festival, the requirements of the Yala National Park, the requirements of the Pilinnawa Coastal Wetland...

Indicators for comparing performance of irrigated agricultural systems AgEcon
Molden, David J.; Sakthivadivel, Ramasamy; Perry, Christopher J.; de Fraiture, Charlotte; Kloezen, Wim H..
Outlines IWMI's external and other comparative performance indicators that allow for analysis of irrigation performance across systems. The purpose of these indicators is to understand the current situation with respect to productive utilization of land and water, to compare relative performance of systems, and to identify where performance can be improved.
